Why an ERJ series on air pollution?

چکیده
T he readers of the European Respiratory Journal are well aware of the importance of environmental exposures on the incidence and aggravation of several respiratory disorders, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), leading in some cases to mortality. Almost each month, one or more scientific articles deal with environmental lung diseases or with environmentally induced cardiovascular conditions (including ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and stroke), often in patients already affected by smokingrelated pulmonary diseases.

Cross-sectional study of asthma and rhinitis symptoms in the context of exposure to air pollution in Nepal
Asthma is common in children worldwide, although its prevalence varies substantially by location. The prevalence of wheeze over a 12-month period ranged from 2.1% to 32.2% in the older age group (13–14 years) and 4.1% to 32.1% in the younger age group (6–7 years) [1]. There is a positive association between current symptoms of asthma in younger and older children with gross national income [2],...
متن کاملPredicting air pollution in Tehran: Genetic algorithm and back propagation neural network
Suspended particles have deleterious effects on human health and one of the reasons why Tehran is effected is its geographically location of air pollution. One of the most important ways to reduce air pollution is to predict the concentration of pollutants. This paper proposed a hybrid method to predict the air pollution in Tehran based on particulate matter less than 10 microns (PM10), and the...

متن کاملForest fires, air pollution, and mortality in southeast Asia.
I assess the population health effects in Malaysia of air pollution from a widespread series of fires that occurred in Indonesia between April and November of 1997. I describe how the fires occurred and why the associated air pollution was so widespread and long lasting. The main objective is to uncover any mortality effects and to assess how large and important they were. I also investigate wh...
